Gints Zilbalodis' "FLOW"
A Movie Review by Dennis D. McDonald
I had no idea last week this film was an Academy Award nominee—nor did I care. As an animation fan, I simply turned it on and watched it over two nights.
What a film! The animation is gorgeous, the story is clever, and the individual animals have distinct personalities, moving in a realistic and believable way.
Someone accustomed to more action and spoken dialogue might struggle with this film, but for me, the steady flow of the story and the constant shifting of the camera's point of view create a rhythm that sweeps the viewer along.
This is one film I wish I had seen on a large theater screen—just for the colors and sound alone. That might not increase the dramatic impact, but it would certainly enhance the viewer's sense of immersion in this watery world.
